Buddy Up is a volunteer initiative where we spend time with autistic children and teens ranging from around ages five to sixteen. Each 90-minute session is designed to create a welcoming, engaging space where participants can explore art, crafts, technology, interactive games, and other activities while connecting with volunteers.
Because everyone has different interests and ways of learning, we try to make the sessions flexible and interactive rather than following one fixed approach.
My Role
I help design, prepare, and lead activities for Buddy Up sessions.
For our technology-focused activities, I created an interactive AI presentation and learning games to introduce AI concepts in a simple and engaging way. During the sessions, I help explain the activities, interact with participants, and observe how different children respond so that I can adjust the way I teach or communicate when needed.
I also help lead art and craft activities. Before a session, I create a sample painting or craft and plan how to break the project into approachable steps. During the session, I demonstrate the activity and help participants create their own versions while encouraging them to experiment and express their own ideas.
What Leadership Means Here
Buddy Up has taught me that leadership is not always about being the person in charge. It can also mean preparing thoughtfully, communicating clearly, being patient, adapting to different people, and helping create an environment where everyone feels comfortable participating.
