Creating an Inclusive Art Experience through Buddy Up
Activity Designer and Workshop Leader
July 2026
Through GreenToronto’s partnership with North Star Special Needs Society, I designed and led two art activities for children with autism during a two-hour Buddy Up workshop.
I planned an origami project and a Canadian landscape painting activity using acrylic techniques. Before the event, I prepared the activity structure and helped train the volunteer team. During the workshop, I guided the children step by step while adapting the pace and instructions to their individual needs.
One of the most meaningful parts of the experience was seeing each participant complete a piece of artwork they felt proud of. The workshop reminded me that a successful activity is not only about the final artwork. It is also about creating an environment where each person feels supported, comfortable, and confident enough to participate.
My Role
- Designed both art activities.
- Planned the instructional process.
- Trained and coordinated volunteers.
- Guided participants throughout the workshop.
- Adjusted explanations and support based on individual needs.
What I Learned
I learned to be more patient and flexible as a leader. Clear planning is important, but so is recognizing when someone needs a different explanation, more time, or additional encouragement.
